Rising Above

Living for 4 years 12 stories above Fairmount influenced my view further. Seen from above, the city loosened its edges. Individual buildings surrendered to density, and detail gave way to rhythm.

Chapter IV — Abstraction as Language

Abstraction emerged not as a departure, but as a necessity. Color, flow, and gesture became the most honest way to speak about place. Windows and doorways dissolved into movement; streets unraveled into currents of paint. These chapters explore the point where representation softens, allowing emotion and memory to carry the image forward.

Chapter VI — Convergence

In the most recent work, cities overlap and merge. Philadelphia meets Port-au-Prince; memory meets observation. The paintings exist between abstraction and reality, shaped by many places at once. They are not maps or documents, but lived impressions—cities remembered, felt, and reimagined. Together, these chapters form a single narrative: the city as a collective human expression, imperfect and deeply alive.

Chapter V — Barrios and Beyond

Looking outward, images of barrios across the world—Port-au-Prince, Mexico City, Peru, Chile, Rio de Janeiro—felt uncannily familiar. Though separated by geography, these neighborhoods shared a visual and emotional language: density, improvisation, resilience. They echoed the neighborhoods of Philadelphia, suggesting a universal structure beneath cultural difference. These works draw from that shared pulse.

The Living City

At a certain point, the city stopped behaving like architecture and began to feel alive. Neighborhoods pulsed with their own internal logic, shaped by human presence, memory, and time. These works treat the city as an organism—layered, adaptive, and constantly in motion. Structure remains, but it bends under the weight of lived experience.
