Barrios; Revelations

Philadelphia

Every city holds corners where the neighborhood gathers. One might think of a crossing like Kensington and Allegheny in Philadelphia, where storefronts press close to the sidewalk, daily life circulates through the intersection, and the rumble of the El train overhead becomes part of the city’s heartbeat.

Chicago

Elsewhere the mind might drift to a corner such as 63rd and Halsted in Chicago, where buses slow, voices collect on the sidewalk, the neighborhood folds itself around the crossing, and the rich aroma of Italian beef and peppers drifts from a nearby shop.

Brooklyn

Another fragment suggests the pulse of intersections like Fulton and Utica in Brooklyn, where the steady movement of buses and storefront traffic turns an ordinary crossing into the center of neighborhood life. You slip past the exhaust of a bus as it rumbles away, only to be wrapped in the scent of pizza drifting from the corner shop.

Port-au-Prince

The image might call to mind a crowded crossroads somewhere in Port-au-Prince. As you turn the corner, a line of vendors unfolds, offering the sizzle of griot, the golden crisp of fried plantains, and the warm spice of patties, filling the air with the lively heartbeat of the street.

Rio de Janeiro

Or perhaps the image carries the feeling of neighborhoods climbing the hills above Rio de Janeiro—places like Santa Teresa. The scent of pão de queijo and feijoada drifts through the warm air, mingling for a moment with the faint must of narrow alleyways—yet the aroma of a hillside café soon rises above, inviting you onward.

Lima

One might imagine the crowded life of a district such as Barrios Altos in Lima, where narrow streets, vendors, and buses move through tightly packed blocks. The memory of a vendor’s sizzling anticuchos—grilled skewers kissed with spice—lingers in the air as the rhythm of the street continues.

Santiago

The structure could also belong to a working-class quarter like La Legua in Santiago, where the life of the barrio unfolds along long avenues and smaller calles. As you walk, the golden scent of empanadas drifts from a nearby window, mingling with the quiet pulse of the street below.

Soweto

And somewhere the memory may reach a township street in Orlando West in Soweto, where community life pulses through familiar blocks. The honk of taxis and the shuffle of minibus queues fill the air as people weave through the lively rhythm of the streets.

Mumbai

The pattern appears again in cities far from these streets—perhaps somewhere in Mumbai. The humid air, heavy with the promise of rain, mixes with the distant call of chai vendors as the monsoon rhythm of the city moves through the crowded intersection.

Closing

In the end, the city revealed here belongs to no single map. It is assembled from the memory of many neighborhoods—corners where streets converge and daily life gathers.

These paintings hold those places in suspension, suggesting that the rhythms of the barrio repeat across cities everywhere. In each crossing, in each fragment, we find a shared story of movement, sound, and everyday life.

You can fall into one of these paintings with your imagination—and wake up exactly where you began.

Inspired by the exploration of barrios, I have selected one of my large-scale paintings and chosen to “visit” inside various parts of it—exploding sections of the image to reveal deeper meanings and to create a series of locales.

  • Each fragment becomes a place.

  • Each place suggests a neighborhood.
